Cruise arrivals to Puerto Plata are set to surge this December, with a total of 81 cruise ships scheduled to dock across the province’s two terminals. According to the latest schedules, 28 ships are expected at Amber Cove, while 53 ships are set to arrive at Taíno Bay.
This marks a strong start to the peak tourist season, which runs from December through April, and highlights the region’s continued growth as one of the Caribbean’s most attractive cruise destinations.
Cruise Ship Arrivals – December 2025
-
Total arrivals: 81 ships
-
Amber Cove: 28 ships
-
Taíno Bay: 53 ships
The increasing number of ships docking directly in the city port (Taíno Bay) may signal that both cruise lines and passengers value the convenience of immediate access to local attractions, shops, restaurants, and other facilities—without the need to travel from outlying terminals.
This trend is excellent news for businesses located in Puerto Plata’s urban area, as many cruise passengers now choose to explore independently rather than booking organized excursions. This shift represents a significant opportunity for local tourism businesses.

Puerto Plata is cementing its status as a Caribbean cruise tourism leader, preparing for an incredible November with 62 cruise ship arrivals scheduled!
This massive influx is split between the province’s two major ports:
- Taino Bay will welcome 39 cruise ships.
- Amber Cove will host 23 cruise ships.
A Major Economic Boost for the North Coast
The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), led by Minister David Collado, has been laser-focused on promoting cruise tourism as a key strategy to strengthen and diversify the nation’s travel sector.
The northern regional director of Tourism, Atahualpa Paulino, emphasized the huge positive ripple effect of this schedule on the local economy.
“The month of November will mark one of the periods of greatest movement in the country’s tourist ports,” Paulino said. “These 62 cruise ships reflect the confidence of the main international lines in Puerto Plata and show strong support for Minister Collado’s efforts to strengthen Dominican tourism.”
This sustained increase in arrivals reaffirms Puerto Plata’s appeal, which is driven by its modern port infrastructure, rich cultural and natural attractions, and the renowned hospitality of the Dominican people.
Record Growth and New Vessels
The November figures represent a significant jump from October, which saw 25 cruises (14 at Taino Bay and 11 at Amber Cove).
The region continues to attract major international lines. For example, September celebrated the inaugural visits of two impressive ships:
- Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady (arrived September 28)
- Capacity: Up to 2,762 passengers and 1,150 crew.
- Size: 277 meters long.
- Coral Cruiser Line’s Queen Elizabeth (arrived September 30)
- Capacity: Up to 2,092 passengers.
- Size: 294 meters long.
APORDOM director Jean Luis Rodríguez highlighted these milestones, noting that the inclusion of such major vessels in Dominican itineraries is a strong indicator of international confidence in the nation’s ports and vibrant tourism appeal.
September promises another busy month for cruise tourism in Puerto Plata, as there are 21 ships scheduled to dock at Amber Cove and the Taino Bay terminals. These liners, often carrying thousands of passengers, boost the presence of international visitors in the city and throughout the region. According to the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), Amber Cove will see 12 vessels, while Taino Bay is scheduled to receive 9 arrivals, ensuring a steady flow of passengers throughout the month.
The number of cruises tends to decline slightly at this time of year due to the risk of adverse weather conditions, as the Caribbean is at the peak of the hurricane season. Even if one of the storms is hundreds of kilometers away, rough seas can be unpleasant for passengers. September is often one of the months with a higher risk of hurricanes, so cruise operators limit sailings as fewer passengers are willing to take a chance.
For Puerto Plata, each ship arrival represents a significant economic opportunity, benefiting tour guides, taxi drivers, tour operators, and local businesses. The activity reinforces Puerto Plata’s reputation as a key Caribbean cruise destination and highlights the importance of its two terminals in the region.
The President Visits Puerto Plata.
Additionally, the weekend of the 6th and 7th of September will see President Luis Abinader undertaking a number of functions in the province. On Saturday, he will inaugurate the Maimón road – Playa Teco, a road that improves access to one of the most visited destinations by local and international tourists, promoting tourism and development of the region.
On Sunday, in the afternoon, he will inaugurate the new building of the Dominican Association of Tourist Press (Adompretur), strengthening the tourist and administrative infrastructure of the institution. Additionally, he will review the renovated sidewalks and curbs of the historic center of Puerto Plata, improving pedestrian mobility, security, and urban aesthetics for the benefit of residents, traders, and tourists.
The Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM) has confirmed that the province of Puerto Plata, through the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay terminals, will receive 20 cruise liners in August.
The executive director of the Dominican Port Authority, Jean Luis Rodríguez, has highlighted the great importance of frequent cruise arrivals through different terminals. He emphasised that this confirms the Dominican Republic is an ideal destination for cruisers, thanks to the facilities and amenities provided in the ports, particularly those in Puerto Plata.
Rodriguez added that, in the cruise arrival report for August, the Amber Cove terminal will receive more boats with 12, followed by Taíno Bay with 8. Additionally, Port Cabo Rojo will welcome 2.
He was also able to confirm that the ships that will dock in Dominican ports are MSC Worlds America, Norwegian Aqua, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Vista, Oasis of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Magic, MSC Seascape, MSC World America, Celebrity Beyond, Carnival Vista, Island Princes, Freedom of the Seas and Norwegian Escape.
The number of cruise liners docking in Puerto Plata shows a slight decline compared to August 2024, when 30 ships docked in the two ports. That month, 14 docked in Taíno Bay and 16 at Amber Cove.
This week (20th – 26th July 2025) saw the launch of the Association of Tourist Press of the Dominican Republic. Puerto Plata was chosen for this inauguration as it is recognised as being the birthplace of Dominican Republic tourism.
The association is a non-profit organization aimed at promoting research, training, and ethical outreach around national and international tourism development. It will have subsidiaries in important tourist and urban centers of the country, including Puerto Plata, Sosúa-Cabarete, Santiago, Samaná, La Romana, Santo Domingo, as well as in the U.S. cities of Miami and New York, where a large Dominican community linked to the sector lives.
Whilst we welcome the formation of this association, we seriously cannot believe the chosen acronym. ASOPRETURD! Really! Anyone who has any understanding of slang knows that “turd” is a lump of excrement. Add to that the opening two letters AS, and you have a connection that rapidly forms an AS-PRE-TURD. Or one might be excused for thinking this is an organization designed to produce “pieces of solid waste”. Hardly the most appropriate designation for an organization created to promote tourism in Puerto Plata and the Dominican Republic as a whole.
Hopefully, someone with some vision will recognize the unfortunate choice of this acronym and change it before it becomes indelibly fixed in people’s minds!
Puerto Plata continues to solidify its status as a key hub for cruise tourism, with 36 cruise ship arrivals scheduled for July 2025. According to the Ministry of Tourism, 20 of these ships will dock at Amber Cove and 16 at Taino Bay, the port located within the city.
This influx highlights Puerto Plata’s growing importance within the global cruise circuit, bringing thousands of international visitors and positively impacting the local economy through trade, job creation, and cultural promotion. Notable vessels set to arrive include Carnival Mardi Gras, MSC World America, Symphony of the Seas, Norwegian Escape, and Enchanted Princess.
July is expected to be another pivotal month for Puerto Plata, reinforcing its position as a leading cruise destination in the Caribbean. This follows from the 300 cruise ships that docked in the province during the first five months of the year.
Whilst cruise passengers are very welcome, their visit to the city and area are limited to one day, so the news of the incorporation of six new weekly flights from Copa Airlines, beginning in January 2026, represents a significant boost for the provinces of Santiago and Puerto Plata. There will be three weekly Panama-Puerto Plata and three weekly Panama-Santiago flights, using 166-seater Boeing 737 aircraft.
With these routes, a significant increase in visitors from Central and South America is expected, two markets with great interest in Caribbean destinations such as the Dominican Republic. Visitors arriving by air are also people who plan to stay for longer periods, staying in hotels or privately rented accommodations, and dining in local restaurants. They are also more inclined to visit places of interest and use local transport and facilities.
Looking for the next must-visit destination in the Caribbean? Puerto Plata, the Caribbean cruise hub, is ready to impress. With 38 cruise ship arrivals scheduled for May 2025, this vibrant Dominican city is quickly establishing itself as the Caribbean’s top cruise port. Home to Amber Cove and Taino Bay, two world-class cruise terminals, Puerto Plata is where culture, adventure, and warm hospitality come together.
This month, 20 ships will dock at Amber Cove, while 18 will arrive at Taino Bay, bringing thousands of eager travelers to experience everything the north coast has to offer. The Ministry of Tourism, led by Minister David Collado, announced this record-setting cruise schedule as part of its transparent tourism development strategy and ongoing efforts to boost economic growth through sustainable travel.
Visitors can expect to see major cruise lines like Carnival, Norwegian, MSC, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, and Virgin Voyages making regular stops. Featured ships include the MSC World America, Carnival Mardi Gras, Norwegian Aqua, and the iconic Oasis of the Seas. Arrivals typically begin as early as 7:00 AM, with most ships departing by 6:30 PM, leaving plenty of time to explore the city’s beaches, markets, and colonial charm.
To enhance the experience, the Ministry has launched the “Exploring Puerto Plata” campaign, spotlighting the city’s cultural richness, local gastronomy, and historic sites. From the cable car ride to Mount Isabel de Torres, to the cobblestone streets of downtown and the oceanfront Malecon, there’s something here for every traveler.
Puerto Plata is more than just a stop—it’s a destination. With state-of-the-art terminals, a welcoming community, and unmatched natural beauty, it’s no wonder more travelers are choosing Puerto Plata as one of the sought after places to visit in the Caribbean.
So come and explore Puerto Plata—where every cruise arrival is the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
Puerto Plata continues to solidify its position as a leading cruise destination, with 64 cruise ships scheduled to arrive at Amber Cove and Taino Bay in February. The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) reported that 23 boats will do so through Amber Cove and 41 through Taino Bay, representing a significant boost for the province. This represents an increase compared to February 2024, when 57 cruise ships visited the area, demonstrating a 10% growth in arrivals.
This surge in cruise tourism follows a record-breaking 2024, with Puerto Plata welcoming over 2.1 million cruise passengers. With the current growth trajectory, the city aims to attract 2.5 million cruise visitors in 2025.
To support the continued growth and enhance the visitor experience, the Puerto Plata City Council has approved a $1 tourist tax per visitor. This tax, applicable only to tourists participating in organized excursions through tour operators, will fund crucial improvements to the city’s tourism infrastructure, including beautification projects, enhanced security measures, and improved services in key areas like La Puntilla, Plaza Independencia, and Paseo de Doña Blanca.
While the cruise ship boom brings significant economic benefits, it also presents challenges for the city. The tourist tax is intended to address these challenges by generating approximately $800,000 to $1 million annually for the maintenance and upkeep of tourist attractions.
Atahualpa Paulino, Regional Director of Tourism for the North, emphasized the importance of maintaining Puerto Plata as a world-class destination. He credited the efforts of President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado for strengthening the tourism infrastructure and enhancing the competitiveness of Puerto Plata.
The implementation of the tourist tax has generated some debate among the local population and businesses. While the city council believes the tax is necessary to sustain the growth and enhance the visitor experience, some stakeholders expressed concerns about the lack of prior consultation before the tax was approved.
Despite these concerns, Puerto Plata remains a highly sought-after cruise destination, with January 2025 witnessing a record 81 cruise ship arrivals since the opening of Amber Cove in 2015 and Taino Bay in 2021.
Puerto Plata, the “Bride of the Atlantic,” is poised for another year of explosive tourism growth, following a record-breaking 2024 that saw 86 cruise ships grace its shores in December alone. The new year promises continued success, with 81 cruise ships scheduled to arrive at its main ports, Amber Cove and Taíno Bay, in January 2025. This influx will undoubtedly inject significant economic activity into the region, offering thousands of visitors the opportunity to experience the province’s renowned natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
Amber Cove is set to welcome 27 vessels in January, while Taíno Bay will receive a substantial 54, showcasing the growing popularity of both terminals among cruise lines. These figures underscore these ports’ crucial role in the Dominican Republic’s thriving cruise tourism sector.
In 2024, the Ámber Cove and Taíno Bay terminals collectively received a remarkable 82.6% of the 2,656,305 cruise passengers who visited the country. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous year, highlighting the growing appeal of Puerto Plata as a cruise destination.
Specifically, Taíno Bay witnessed a substantial 34.8% increase in passenger arrivals, welcoming 994,609 visitors in 2024. Meanwhile, Amber Cove, owned by Carnival Corporation, experienced a remarkable 45.2% growth, with 1,201,255 passengers arriving at the Maimon-based terminal.
The Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado, emphasized the remarkable success of the nation’s cruise tourism sector in 2024. He highlighted that all national cruise terminals combined received a staggering 2,656,305 passengers, representing a 141% increase compared to the 1,552,407 passengers who arrived in 2023. This unprecedented growth signifies a new era of prosperity for the tourism industry and promises continued economic development for the Dominican Republic.
December Brings a Surge in Cruise Ship Arrivals to Puerto Plata
Puerto Plata is poised for a remarkable tourism surge this December, with an impressive 86 cruise ships scheduled to dock in its ports. This represents a near doubling of the 46 cruise ships that arrived in November, signaling continued growth in the region’s tourism sector and underscoring Puerto Plata’s rising prominence as a key Caribbean destination.
Unprecedented Cruise Activity
According to Carlos Atahualpa Paulino, regional director of the Ministry of Tourism in Puerto Plata, the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay terminals will play central roles in handling this extraordinary influx of visitors. Amber Cove is set to welcome 32 ships, while Taíno Bay will host a record-breaking 54 ships throughout the month.
On four separate days in December, both ports will simultaneously host five vessels, demonstrating their robust operational capacity and readiness to manage high volumes of passenger traffic efficiently. This monumental activity is expected to bring approximately 258,000 tourists to Puerto Plata, with each ship carrying an average of 3,000 passengers.
Tourism Growth Across the Region
The cruise ship boom is just one aspect of Puerto Plata’s thriving tourism industry. Mountain destinations like Jarabacoa and Constanza, known for their cooler climates and scenic beauty, have reported high occupancy rates, reflecting strong interest in the broader northern region. This diverse tourism appeal highlights the Dominican Republic’s ability to cater to various traveler preferences, from beach getaways to eco-tourism adventures.
Opportunities for Local Businesses
The significant influx of visitors in December offers a golden opportunity for local businesses to capitalize on increased demand. Tourists arriving on cruise ships often have higher-than-average disposable incomes, making them ideal clients for businesses in the hospitality, retail, and service sectors.
Businesses that actively promote their services and offerings are likely to see the greatest benefits. This is a prime moment for local entrepreneurs to attract new customers and boost sales, especially by leveraging platforms that enhance visibility.
