The Province of Puerto Plata continues to strengthen its position in the cruise tourism sector, with a schedule of 38 ships scheduled to arrive during October 2026 at the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay terminals.

According to the Ministry of Tourism’s schedule, Amber Cove will receive 18 cruise liners, while Taíno Bay will welcome 20 arrivals, maintaining a significant flow of visitors to the province.
The arrival of these cruise ships continues to boost tourism and commercial activity in the Province, and particularly the City of Puerto Plata, benefiting tour guides, transport providers, artisans, vendors, and other businesses within the tourism industry.

After two years and three months of closure, the Government will begin construction of the updated Puerto Plata Cable Car on Saturday, October 3, carried out by Doppelmayr, one of the world’s leading companies in building this type of transportation.
The event, which will take place at 10:00 in the morning at the main station, will be headed by the minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza; the minister of Tourism, David Collado, and the directors of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Igor Rodríguez, and of the Execution Unit for the Readjustment of Neighborhoods and Environments (URBE), Rocío Isabel Vidal.
The project for the renovation and renewal of the Puerto Plata Cable Car has an investment of more than US$ 20 million, financed by the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), and represents the most important upgrade of this infrastructure since its inauguration in 1975.
The renewed infrastructure will allow the system to be fully modernized with state-of-the-art technology, increasing the transport capacity from 18 to 50 passengers per cabin, which will triple the operating capacity of the cable car and significantly reduce waiting times for visitors.
There will be reduced travel time from eight to five minutes, thanks to a higher-efficiency electromechanical design and an operating speed of 10 meters per second, offering a more agile, safe, and comfortable transport experience.
The project will also include updating the system to the highest international safety standards, through compliance with the European UNE-EN standards for cable cars, as well as the remodeling of the stations with universal accessibility criteria and the preservation of the historical identity of the emblematic tourist attraction.
The Rehabilitation of the Puerto Plata Cable Car is estimated for completion around April 2028, given an execution period of approximately 18 months starting from the official work kick-off on October 3, 2026
Puerto Plata recorded a significant cruise tourism operation on Tuesday, September 15, with the simultaneous arrival of four cruise ships with 16,714 passengers and 5,806 crew members on board at the Taíno Bay and Amber Cove terminals.
The Dominican Port Authority stated that the operation highlights Puerto Plata’s growing role as one of the country’s leading cruise destinations and generates activity for transportation, excursions, restaurants, handicrafts, retail, and other tourism-related businesses.
The Port Authority’s executive director, Alejandro Campos, stated that the growth of cruise tourism should translate into greater economic opportunities for local communities.
Based on an estimated average expenditure of US$100 per passenger, the 16,714 visitors could represent approximately$1.67 million in potential passenger spending in Puerto Plata during the day. That estimate does not include potential spending by crew members.
Four cruise ships arrive in Puerto Plata
In the Taíno Bay Tourist Terminal, the Adventure of the Seas arrived from Port Canaveral with 3,739 passengers and 1,193 crew members. In comparison, the Beyond Fame arrived from Miami with 3,175 passengers and 1,419 crew members.
In Amber Cove, in Maimón, the Mardi Gras arrived from Grand Turk with 5,547 passengers and 1,763 crew members, while the Carnival Vista arrived from Port Canaveral with 4,253 passengers and 1,431 crew members.
The simultaneous operation demonstrates the ability of both terminals to handle multiple cruise ships and a large volume of visitors.
Puerto Plata strengthens the growth of cruise tourism.
This arrival coincides with the continued boom in cruise activity in Puerto Plata. As of August 2026, Taíno Bay had received 800,680 cruise ship visitors and is projected to reach approximately 1.22 million passengers by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Amber Cove recorded 700,578 passengers between January and August.
The Dominican Port Authority stated that the continued increase in cruise ship arrivals is benefiting businesses and communities throughout the entire tourism and commercial value chain in Puerto Plata.
Dealing with the arrival of thousands of cruise passengers in a single day presents many challenges for the city and province of Puerto Plata. Enabling visitors to locate and reach the various attractions, restaurants, and the varied tourist-related businesses needs the use of a dynamic directory, which gopuertoplata.com seeks to offer. Listing your business is simple and provides visitors with a simple way to find what you offer using Google Maps to find you.
As Puerto Plata continues to strengthen its position as a major cruise tourism center in the Dominican Republic, why not take full advantage of GoPuertoPlata to increase your visibility and attract more tourists to your business?
Puerto Plata could see even more Canadian visitors during the upcoming winter season as air connectivity between Canada and the Dominican Republic continues to expand.
Dominican Airports Siglo XXI (AERODOM), a member of the VINCI Airports network, has announced increased air connectivity between Canada and the Dominican Republic for the 2026–2027 winter season, following continued growth in passenger traffic at the airports it operates.
During 2026, passenger traffic from Canada at Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata increased by 13% compared with 2025.
More Flights and Greater Capacity This Winter
To meet the continued demand from the Canadian market, new operations are being added from December 2026.
At Puerto Plata:
- Air Transat will add a weekly flight from London, Ontario.
- WestJet will introduce a weekly route connecting Winnipeg with Puerto Plata.
Overall, seating capacity between Puerto Plata and Canada is expected to increase by 20% for the winter season.
Air Transat is currently one of the leading carriers in the Canadian market at Puerto Plata, with approximately 153,000 passengers, followed by WestJet with more than 113,000.
AERODOM CEO Cyril Girot said the growth of the Canadian market and the airlines’ response with additional routes and capacity demonstrate the potential of the market and provide travelers with more options between Canada and the Dominican Republic.
Longer-Stay Visitors Mean More Opportunities for Local Businesses
For Puerto Plata businesses, increased air connectivity can be particularly important because visitors arriving by air are generally staying much longer than cruise passengers.
A cruise passenger may spend only a few hours in Puerto Plata before returning to their ship. An air traveler, however, may stay for a week, several weeks, or even a few months.
That creates a very different spending opportunity for local businesses.
Canadian visitors have long been an important part of the North Coast’s tourism market, particularly in areas such as Sosúa, Cabarete, and Puerto Plata City beaches. During the winter months, some Canadians choose to spend extended periods in the Dominican Republic to escape the cold weather at home.
These longer-term visitors have more time to explore the province and are likely to use a much wider range of local businesses and services.
They may eat at local restaurants, shop at supermarkets and stores, visit pharmacies and medical facilities, use transportation services, hire cars, arrange excursions and activities, hire tradespeople and maintenance companies, and look for professional and household services.
Visitors who own or rent villas and condominiums can have an even greater need for reliable local service providers, from property maintenance and cleaning to repairs, construction, security, and other specialized services.
For local businesses, these visitors represent more than a single transaction. A visitor staying for weeks or months has considerably more opportunities to become a regular customer.
Can Canadian Visitors Find Your Business?
One of the biggest challenges for a visitor in an unfamiliar area is simply knowing where to find the products and services they need.
A visitor may know they need a dentist, mechanic, restaurant, supermarket, electrician, doctor, tour operator, or a property service — but they may not know which local businesses provide those services.
This is where GoPuertoPlata.com can help.
Businesses listed in the GoPuertoPlata directory can provide visitors with important information such as their business description, contact details, location, opening hours, photographs, and the services they provide.
The more complete and up-to-date your business information is, the easier it is for someone searching for that particular service to discover your business and make contact.
Make Sure Your Business Can Be Found
With additional flights from Canada and increased winter capacity, Puerto Plata is continuing to attract visitors who may stay considerably longer than the typical cruise passenger.
For local businesses, that means an opportunity to reach people who are not simply passing through the city for a few hours, but who may be living, staying, shopping, and spending throughout Puerto Plata Province for weeks or even months.
If you operate a business or provide a service in Puerto Plata Province, make sure visitors can find you.
Add your business to GoPuertoPlata.com, provide useful information about what you offer, and help Canadian visitors and other newcomers discover the local businesses and services available throughout the province.
And if you have used a local business yourself, consider leaving a recommendation or review. Your experience can help other visitors make informed decisions and help good local businesses attract new customers.
Find local businesses. Share your experiences. Help Puerto Plata grow.
Puerto Plata took a major step toward a more inclusive future today with the signing of the “Puerto Plata, Accessible Destination” agreement. The deal brings together the Tourist Cluster of the Destination Puerto Plata, TRAVEGALI, and the Ministry of Tourism, with support from the Municipality, in an event led by the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado. The goal: make Puerto Plata the second destination in the country to implement a comprehensive accessibility model — opening the door for more travelers than ever to experience everything the North Coast has to offer.
A Shared Vision for the Destination
Birgitt Heinsen, president of the Tourist Cluster of the Puerto Plata Destination, opened the event by underscoring how the agreement reflects a shared commitment among the region’s tourism players. She noted that this signing is only a first step, and that lasting impact will depend on more businesses across the tourism value chain — hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and beyond — joining the effort so that accessibility becomes part of Puerto Plata’s culture, not just a policy on paper.
César José de los Santos, speaking as host of the event, reaffirmed Playa Dorada’s ongoing commitment to accessibility, highlighting the complex’s continued investment in initiatives that make the destination more welcoming for all visitors.
What the Agreement Actually Covers
Rafael Blanco, president of TRAVEGALI, walked attendees through the roadmap behind the initiative. It begins with a full diagnostic of the destination’s current accessibility conditions, followed by a phased plan to upgrade tourism infrastructure and services over time.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the plan includes:
- Training programs: for hospitality and tourism staff across the destination
- Improved digital communication: so travelers can find clear, reliable accessibility information before they even arrive
- An international promotion strategy: targeting the fast-growing accessible tourism market
Implementation will roll out progressively across hotels, restaurants, tour operators, parks, shops, museums, beaches, transportation providers, the port, the airport, public institutions, and community organizations — meaning the entire destination, not just a handful of properties, is expected to raise the bar together.
Why It Matters for Visitors
At its core, the agreement is about dignity and independence. It creates a framework for Puerto Plata’s tourism businesses and public institutions to work together so that travelers with disabilities, older adults, and anyone with accessibility needs can explore the destination with greater safety, autonomy, and confidence.
Minister Collado closed the event by praising the initiative, emphasizing that strengthening accessibility also strengthens Puerto Plata’s overall competitiveness as a destination — helping more travelers, from more markets, fully enjoy what the Dominican Republic has to offer.
The event also drew Brigadier General Minoru Matsunaga, director of the Central Directorate of the Tourism Police (POLITUR); Diomedes Roque García, mayor of San Felipe de Puerto Plata; and representatives from the private sector, civil society, and local media.
With this agreement, Puerto Plata is positioning itself as a rising benchmark for accessible tourism in the Caribbean — and an increasingly attractive choice for the millions of travelers worldwide who prioritize accessible travel options.
What This Means for Puerto Plata Businesses — And Why Now Is the Time to Claim Your Listing
For hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and attractions across the destination, this agreement isn’t just a policy milestone — it’s a business opportunity, and one with a clear first move:
Claim or add your free listing on GoPuertoPlata.com.
Accessible tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments in global travel, and travelers in this segment do their research before they book. They’re actively searching for clear, specific accessibility information — and if your business isn’t listed, or your listing is thin on detail, you’re invisible to exactly the travelers this destination-wide initiative is about to attract. A claimed, well-detailed listing puts your business directly in front of them at the moment they’re deciding where to stay, eat, and book excursions.
An updated listing does double duty: it showcases your accessibility features and promotes your services or products to every visitor browsing the site — not just those with accessibility needs. A few ways to make yours work harder:
- Hotels and resorts: can highlight step-free access, accessible rooms and bathrooms, pool lifts, and trained staff — often the deciding factor for travelers with mobility needs — while also showcasing rooms, amenities, and packages to every guest browsing.
- Restaurants and beach clubs: can note wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating, and restrooms alongside their menu highlights and signature dishes, giving guests every reason to choose them before they even arrive.
- Tour operators and excursion providers: can specify which tours are adapted for limited mobility or sensory needs, opening their experiences to a wider audience while promoting what makes each excursion worth booking.
- Museums, parks, and attractions: can list accessible pathways, ramps, and on-site assistive services right alongside what makes a visit worthwhile.
- Transportation providers: including airport transfers and taxis, can advertise accessible vehicles and trained drivers as a standout service that sets them apart from the competition.
Puerto Plata’s accessibility roadmap is rolling out now, and the businesses that update their listings first will be the ones this new wave of travelers finds first.
Claim your free listing on GoPuertoPlata.com today to add your accessibility features, promote your services, and make sure your business is ready for the visitors this initiative is bringing to the destination. Businesses can also connect with the Tourist Cluster of the Destination Puerto Plata or TRAVEGALI to learn more about getting involved in the wider accessibility push.
Thousands of Villa Montellano Families Set to Receive Property Titles as Punta Bergantín Development Moves Forward:-
VILLA MONTELLANO, Puerto Plata – More than 3,000 families in the municipality of Villa Montellano are moving closer to receiving formal title to properties they have occupied for many years, as the Technical Execution Unit of State Land Title (UTECT) advances its National Titling Plan in Puerto Plata Province.
The current operation involves the signing of donation and transfer documents, an important legal step before definitive property title certificates can be issued to beneficiaries.
For families who have lived on state-owned land for decades without formal documentation, the process represents much more than paperwork. A legal title provides greater security of ownership, strengthens family assets, and can increase the value and economic potential of their property.
More Than 3,000 Families in Montellano
During a supervisory visit to the different titling operations taking place throughout Puerto Plata Province, UTECT Executive Director Duarte Méndez Peña highlighted the progress being made in Villa Montellano and the strong participation of local residents.
UTECT legal teams are carrying out the signing operation at the Madre Teresa de Calcutta Educational Center, where beneficiaries are completing the necessary documentation before receiving their definitive property titles.
Méndez Peña explained that the current operation is expected to benefit more than 3,000 families in the municipality.
“We are working so that more and more families of Puerto Plata can receive legal certainty, which is a title deed.”
The official also pointed to the recent completion of a social census operation in the San Marcos sector, where 3,578 results were obtained, as part of the wider titling programme being carried out in the province.
The UTECT is currently developing titling projects not only in Villa Montellano but also in San Marcos, El Javillar, Vista Bella, Cerro Isabela and Belloso. Across these projects, the Government expects to deliver more than 6,000 property titles in Puerto Plata Province.
Why Property Titles Matter
Formal property ownership can have a significant long-term impact on families and communities.
For homeowners, a definitive title provides legal certainty and protection of property rights. It can also strengthen household wealth by giving owners a formally recognised asset that can be transferred to future generations.
At a wider community level, formalising property ownership can help encourage investment, improve confidence in local real estate, and create a stronger foundation for future economic development.
Montellano Mayor Héctor Almonte described the process as transformational for families who have waited many years for legal recognition of their homes.
He said that receiving a title provides families with greater peace of mind, stability and new opportunities for development, while praising the efficiency and organisation of the UTECT operation.
An Important Development for Villa Montellano
The timing of the titling programme is particularly significant because Villa Montellano is entering a period of potentially major economic and tourism development.
The municipality is home to Punta Bergantín, a large-scale tourism and economic development project being developed along the Puerto Plata coast. The project is intended to create a new tourism destination incorporating hotels, residential and mixed-use development, commercial areas, recreational facilities and other services. Official project information describes Punta Bergantín as a development that will help transform Villa Montellano from a community historically associated with the sugar industry toward one with a stronger tourism focus.
The scale of the development makes the strengthening of the local community particularly important. Punta Bergantín’s master plan includes multiple hotels, vacation and mixed-use units, together with commercial and recreational facilities. The project also places emphasis on sustainability and community development.
Recent work has included the development of the Meliá Bergantín Beach hotel, while other international hotel brands are expected to participate in the wider development. The Dominican Presidency has described Punta Bergantín as an important part of the effort to relaunch Puerto Plata’s tourism industry and position the North Coast as a world-class destination.
Property Security and Economic Opportunity
The combination of property regularisation and major investment could prove particularly important for Villa Montellano.
As tourism development progresses, local residents and businesses are likely to encounter new opportunities for employment, commerce and entrepreneurship. A secure property title gives families a stronger legal and financial foundation from which to participate in that changing economy.
The potential economic impact is already attracting attention. A study presented in July 2026 examined the expected economic effects of Punta Bergantín’s operations on Villa Montellano, including its potential impact on employment, household income and the local economy.
This makes the current titling programme particularly timely. Providing families with legal certainty over their property can help ensure that the community itself is better positioned to participate in the opportunities created by the development taking place around it.
A New Chapter for Villa Montellano
Villa Montellano has a long history rooted in agriculture and the sugar industry. Today, the municipality stands at the beginning of a potentially very different economic chapter.
The formalisation of property ownership may provide thousands of families with greater security, while Punta Bergantín is expected to bring substantial new tourism investment, infrastructure and commercial activity to the area.
For Puerto Plata Province as a whole, these developments represent more than individual projects. They form part of a broader transformation of the North Coast, with the potential to create stronger communities, new employment opportunities and increased economic activity.
The challenge will be ensuring that local residents and businesses are prepared to take advantage of those opportunities as they emerge.
For Villa Montellano, the combination of secure property ownership, community development and major tourism investment could prove to be an important foundation for the municipality’s future.

An Important Source of Business for Puerto Plata
Cruise passengers have only a limited amount of time to spend in Puerto Plata, making it important for them to be able to identify places to visit and businesses offering the products and services they need before or shortly after arriving.
The economic benefits of cruise tourism extend well beyond the cruise terminals. Taxi drivers, tour guides, restaurants, cafés, shops, artisans, excursion operators, attractions, transportation providers and many other local businesses can benefit from passengers choosing to spend part of their time and money in the province.
For businesses, being easy to find online can therefore be particularly important. A passenger who is deciding where to eat, shop, visit or obtain a service may only have a few hours available before returning to their ship.

Puerto Plata will continue to strengthen its position as the Dominican Republic’s leading cruise destination during August 2026, with 29 cruise ship calls scheduled between the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay cruise terminals.
According to the Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM), 15 cruise ships are scheduled to dock at Amber Cove, while 14 will arrive at Taíno Bay, bringing thousands of international visitors to Puerto Plata throughout the month.
The schedule features vessels from some of the world’s best-known cruise operators, including Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises, reflecting the continued confidence these companies place in Puerto Plata as one of the Caribbean’s premier cruise destinations.

Around 100,000 Visitors Expected
Although the exact passenger numbers vary from ship to ship and not every passenger disembarks, modern cruise ships visiting Puerto Plata typically carry between 3,000 and 4,000 passengers. Based on the August schedule, the province could welcome close to 100,000 cruise passengers during the month, providing another significant boost to the local economy.
These visitors support hundreds of local businesses, including restaurants, cafés, shops, excursion providers, tour guides, taxi drivers, transportation companies, attractions, artisans, and many other tourism-related enterprises throughout Puerto Plata Province.
The busiest days are expected to be 5th, 18th and 19th August, when three cruise ships are scheduled to be in port simultaneously, creating excellent opportunities for businesses serving both visitors and local residents.
Continued Confidence in Puerto Plata
APORDOM Executive Director Jean Luis Rodríguez said the August schedule demonstrates the continued confidence that major international cruise lines have in the Dominican Republic’s ports.
“Receiving 29 cruise ship calls in Puerto Plata during August demonstrates the confidence that major cruise lines continue to place in the Dominican Republic. At APORDOM, we continue working to guarantee safe, modern, and efficient ports, capable of meeting the demands of an increasingly competitive industry and continuing to contribute to the economic and tourism development of our country.”
Among the vessels making the most frequent visits during August are NCL Luna, with five scheduled calls, Caribbean Princess with four, and Carnival Mardi Gras and Carnival Vista, each making three visits to Puerto Plata.
APORDOM also noted that this performance is particularly encouraging because August falls within the Caribbean’s traditional low cruise season, when itineraries are often reduced due to the summer and hurricane season. Maintaining this level of activity further demonstrates Puerto Plata’s growing importance within the regional cruise industry.
Make It Easy for Visitors to Find Your Business
With almost 100,000 potential visitors expected during August alone, local businesses have an excellent opportunity to attract new customers. Many cruise passengers research restaurants, attractions, shops, transportation, and other services before their ship arrives, while others search online after docking to decide how best to spend their limited time ashore.
